EL PASO, Texas, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- An El Paso resident called Customs and Border Protection to report an object on his property that turned out to be a Mexican government drone, officials said.
Ramiro Cordero, a supervisor with the agency, said the device appears to be the first from Mexico to have crashed in the United States, CNN reported. He said the device was determined, after discussions with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. consulate in Juarez, to belong to the Mexican government.
Keith Holloway, a spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board, said the crash occurred Tuesday. He said the drone was made by Aeronautics Defense Systems, which advertises it on its Web site as "the ultimate solution for over-the-hill reconnaissance missions, low-intensity conflicts and urban warfare operations".
The United States uses unmanned drones to monitor the border.
"I guess we are investigating, but we don't know what we're going to do with the information at this point," Holloway said. UPI
