Moscow rally protests racial tensions

MOSCOW, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Marchers in Moscow said they did not intend to allow conditions that led to ethnic rioting earlier this month continue to fester.

Several hundred Russians took part in Sunday's "Moscow for Everyone" rally at Pushkin Square, which was organized in response to a serious street brawl between Russian nationalists and soccer hooligans on Dec. 11.

The violence on the 11th was followed four days later by other disturbances in the capital and in St. Petersburg and other Russian cities between members of different Russian ethnic groups.

"People who came here do not intend to put up with the events that occurred in Moscow on Dec. 11 and 15," Viktor Shenderovich, one of rally organizers, told Russia's RIA Novosti news agency.

RIA Novosti said the rally was largely peaceful and participants passed through police metal detectors at the square. UPI
