Sitter arrested for toddler death

LONG BEACH, Calif., Dec. 6 (UPI) -- A Long Beach, Calif., woman has been arrested in the death four years ago of a toddler she baby-sat, police say.

Lisa Massacani, spokeswoman for the Long Beach Police Department, said 26-year-old Jennifer Garcia was taken into custody at her Stanton workplace Friday.

Garcia was the girlfriend of the boy's father and the child's baby sitter in November 2006 when paramedics responded to a call the toddler had fallen down a flight of stairs, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.

He was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and placed on life support after which hospital authorities called the Long Beach Police Department's Child Abuse Detail, which conducted a preliminary investigation.

After the toddler's condition deteriorated, he was taken off life support and he died on Nov. 17, 2006, police say.

A panel of experts from numerous agencies overseen by the Los Angeles County coroner's office spent four years examining the case before reaching the point where Garcia was arrested, Massacani told United Press International.

She is being held on $1 million bail and will be arraigned Tuesday. UPI
