Storm leaves 53,000 Russians without power

ULYANOVSK, Russia, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- A weekend storm that brought freezing rain and snow to western Russia left more than 53,00 people without electrical power Tuesday, ITAR-Tass reported.

Sources in the regional department of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry told the Russian news agency the outage was affecting 92 settlements in the Ulyanovsk region.

Sixty-nine repair crews were working to restore power to those affected.

Rain mixed with snow fell in the Ulyanovsk region Sunday and temperatures fell as low as 26 degrees Fahrenheit, resulting in a coating of ice that snapped power lines.

An emergency was declared in four rural districts and the city of Dimitrovgrad. UPI
