1 dead in Phoenix senior complex fire

PHOENIX, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- A fire broke out at a senior apartment complex in Phoenix Sunday night, killing one elderly man and sending about 75 people fleeing to safety, authorities said.

Two other people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, The Arizona Republic quoted fire department Capt. Scott Walker as saying.

The cause of the 7:30 p.m. blaze, which began in a second-floor unit at the Washington Manor complex, was being investigated.

The fire only took about 15 minutes to control but it produced thick smoke that prompted the evacuation of nearly 75 people. Several residents found themselves stranded on their balconies.

City officials and Red Cross volunteers were helping find housing and sleeping arrangements for the affected tenants, the newspaper said. UPI
