Derailment hits main Swedish line

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Train service on Sweden's main northern line will be disrupted for several days following a derailment that left six railcars on their sides, authorities said.

No injuries were reported in the Monday evening derailment that affected both freight and passenger traffic, the Swedish news agency TT reported.

The cause of the accident is still unclear, rail officials said.

When asked how long delays would last, Swedish Transport Administration spokesman Peter Behrman said, "Right now, we think several days, but we don't know really".

A freight train traveling from Vannas in northeastern Sweden to Skovde in central Sweden derailed about 9.50 p.m. Monday, officials said.

Six cars went off the tracks in the derailment. The locomotive and the rear carriages remained on the track, but both rails and overhead lines were damaged.

"Nearly 40 trains per day pass the site. And of those, 95 percent are freight trains," STA spokesman Denny Josefsson said.

Mats Hollander of Swedish rail logistics company Green Cargo said many companies would face shipment delays.

"We are working frantically with our customer contacts now to see if we can transport the goods by other means, such as vehicle or boat, or if they can wait a few days," Hollander said. UPI
