NEW DELHI, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- An Indian diplomat in London, alleged to have punched his wife, was asked to return home, Indian Foreign Ministry sources told the Times of India.
The report quoted British media as saying the woman and the couple's 5-year-old son were in hiding.
The Times, quoting Foreign Ministry officials, said the diplomat, currently minister for economics in the Indian High Commission at the embassy in London has been told to return home. The embassy would only say it was awaiting instructions from the ministry.
The report quoted a British newspaper that the diplomat's wife had fled from her home with blood, allegedly from being punched, streaming from her face. The diplomat reportedly invoked diplomatic immunity with police.
The Times report said cancellation of the diplomat's diplomatic immunity by the Indian government could allow British authorities to prosecute him but it was not clear if India would take such an action over what is seen as a domestic issue. UPI
