Man gets jail term for anti-Semitic video

PERTH, Australia, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- An Australian man was sentenced to three years in jail for posting an anti-Semitic video on the Internet, officials said.

Brendon Lee O'Connell, 39, of Perth, was convicted under the state's racial vilification laws, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. said Monday.

O'Connell was found guilty of six offenses. He posted a video on YouTube showing him verbally abusing a young Jewish man in 2009.

Members of the Jewish community attended the sentencing.

"This time it was the Jewish people that were the target, next time it could be Muslims, Asians or any other group," said Steve Lieblich, a member of the Australia-Israel and Jewish Affairs Council. "So we should be pleased that we've had this result and this signal has been sent to Mr. O'Connell and his supporters". UPI
