Medvedev cancels Israel visit over strike

MOSCOW, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has canceled a visit to Israel because of a strike by Israeli Foreign Ministry staff, his office said.

A delegation of 500, including business executives and senior officials, had planned to accompany the president on the Jan. 17-19 trip, RIA Novosti reported.

Israeli President Shimon Peres apologized to Medvedev by telephone Tuesday, the Kremlin said, and the two leaders agreed to meet at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, at the end of the month.

"The Russian president's visit has been postponed until there are conditions that allow us to prepare for such a visit properly," Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said.

For the second week in a row, Foreign Ministry employees are protesting low salaries. UPI
