Militants kill female police officer, her relatives in Pakistan

(CNN) -- Militants stormed the house of a female police officer in northwest Pakistan on Friday morning, killing her and four relatives, authorities said.
The militants, armed with assault rifles, broke into Shamshad Begum's house and started firing, said police official Salim Khan.
They killed Begum, her two sons, her daughter and a daughter-in-law, authorities said.
Begum had received threats from militant groups since she joined the police force, according to Khalid Khan Umarzai, a government official.
The attack happened at a district next to Taliban strongholds in Pakistan's tribal region along the Afghan border.
For years, the Taliban has violently campaigned to impose its strict interpretation of Islamic law in the region.
Under the Taliban's version of Islamic law, girls are not allowed to go to school after a certain age and women are barred from working outside the home.
The Pakistani army has launched at least 10 military offensives against the Taliban in northwest Pakistan, but much of the region is still plagued by militancy. CNN
