Arizona panel OKs anti-immigrant bills

PHOENIX, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Two major measures impacting illegal immigrants have been passed by Arizona's Senate Appropriations Committee.

The committee approved omnibus legislation preventing the children of illegal immigrants from attending school and prohibiting illegal immigrants from buying a car or obtaining licenses to drive or get married, The Arizona Republic reported Wednesday.

The panel also became the first legislative committee in the country to approve a package of bills challenging the practice of automatically granting citizenship to children born in the United States to illegal immigrants.

The measures now go to the full Senate for a vote.

Hundreds of protesters and supporters gathered outside the committee chambers Tuesday while the measures were being discussed and put to a vote.

Two additional immigration-related bills remain to be heard, one of them forcing hospitals to inquire about citizenship status before providing medical treatment.

Public surveys indicate many Arizonans support increased efforts to combat illegal immigration. UPI
