Judges appointment must be on merit : Babar Awan

ISLAMABAD, May 20 (APP): Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Dr Baber Awan here Thursday said the appointment of judges must be on merit and quality and not on kinship. Addressing delegations of District and Tehsil  Bar Associations of  Bahawlnagar, Haroonabad, Chishtian, Fort Abbas and Minchanabad, Babar Awan said the PPP-led government has strengthened the roots of federation and purged the Constitution of the remnants of dictatorial regimes.

The government would also resolve public issues with the power of democracy, he added.

Regarding the formation of the judicial commission with regard to appointment of judges, Baber Awan said it was evident from the commission’s composition  that the executive has transferred most of its powers. There are only three members of executive in the Commission. It would would be headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan along with two most senior judges of Supreme Court, a retired SC judge, Federal Law Minister, Attorney General of Pakistan and a senior member of Pakistan Bar Council.

“There should not be any ambiguity in the formation of Judicial Commission,” he said and added that the government would continue its reconciliation policy involving all political stakeholders which would ensure a strong democratic Pakistan. 

He further said that no political party wanted to take up power in crisis like situation but the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) accepted the challenge and steered the country out of such crises.

At the end of the meeting presidents of all bar associations expressed their complete confidence in government’s policies and assured their full support. >>>
