Rangers get police powers to end violence in Karachi

KARACHI : The law and order in the province, with particular reference to prevailing situation in Karachi, was discussed in detail at a high level meeting held under the chairmanship of Home Minister Dr. Zulfikar Ali Mirza in the office of Secretary Home here Thursday. 

The meeting was attended by Home Secretary Arif Khan, PPO Sindh, AIGs Special Branch and CID, CCPO Karachi, Zonal DIGs East, West and South, DIG HQ besides senior representatives of Pakistan Rangers Sindh and intelligence organisations. 

It was unanimously decided to set up a committee consisting representatives of police, rangers and other law enforcing organisations to check incidents of target killings and arrest of the elements involved. 

The Committee will chalk out a strategy in the light of incidents of target killing in the past and the investigations made therein. It will pin-point the areas where police and rangers are to carry out joint action to ensure check on such incidents in future. 

The Home Minister directed the police and rangers to further improve the intelligence collection and start an indiscriminate and impartial joint action against criminals, anti-state elements right from today and ensure timely action by pursuing any intelligence information. 

He directed that police, rangers and intelligence agencies would ensure mutual liaison to deal with day to day affairs and for immediate action against criminals and mischievous elements. 

On the occasion directives were also issued for strict checking at the city's entry and exit routes and snap checking and it was decided that additional police and rangers would be deployed in the city's selected places with beefed up joint patrolling. 

Meanwhile a notification was issued Thursday extending the police powers entrusted to rangers for another one month under Section-5 of Anti-Terrorism Act 1997. 

Dr Zulfikar Mirza directed the Police, Rangers and other law enforcing organisations to adopt all possible measures to maintain the writ of law and ensure protection to the life and property of citizens and give preference to the country's larger interest without any exigency. >>>
