Nasution Nominated for Governor of Bank Indonesia

JAKARTA--President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has nominated Bank Indonesia acting governor Darmin Nasution as central bank chief, a senior lawmaker said Wednesday.

"We have just received the letter (from the president), which nominates Darmin Nasution as candidate for central bank governor," Pramono Anung, a vice chairman of parliament, said.

Another lawmaker, Achsanul Qasasih, earlier told Dow Jones Newswires that the parliament will likely approve Mr. Nasution's nomination given his "good performance" as acting governor since May 2009. Mr. Qasasih is the deputy chairman of the parliamentary committee that oversees the central bank.

A Nasution-run central bank would likely maintain monetary policies such as keeping interest rates low for as long as possible to stimulate economic growth, and intervening occasionally in the currency market to reduce volatility in the rupiah's exchange rate.
