Police in Kabardino-Balkaria said Sunday that officers killed two militants suspected of involvement in an attack on a hydropower station in the republic.
Local police conducted an operation in the village of Dugulubgei against the two suspects, a police spokesman told Interfax. The men were identified as R. Orshogdugov and R. Seyunov, he said.
The suspects were traveling in a Volga car. When police tried to stop the vehicle, the men opened fire, the spokesman said.
“They were killed by the return fire,” he said.
Police retrieved three guns, several grenades and ammunition from the car.
Six gunmen raided the small Baksan hydropower station in Kabardino-Balkaria on Wednesday, killing two sleeping guards and detonating bombs that destroyed two of its three generators.
Law enforcement sources suspect that local rebel leader Kazbek Tashuyev, also known as Abdul-Dzhabbar, and Asker Dzhappuyev, also known as Emir Abdullakh, may have planned the attack, possibly together.
