China bans police 'shame' parades

BEIJING, July 27 (UPI) -- The Chinese government is calling on police departments around the nation to end the practice of shaming criminal suspects by parading them through the streets.

Shaming has a long history in China; however, the Ministry of Public Security has directed police to instead enforce the law in a "rational, calm and civilized manner".

The New York Times said Chinese have become more critical of shaming, particularly the forced marches of accused prostitutes, in part because the Internet allows images of the parades to be sent well beyond the towns where they occurred.
