Gil opens Swiss Open with upset win

GSTAAD, Switzerland, July 26 (UPI) -- Frederico Gil won eight of the last nine games Monday in claiming a first-round upset victory over Tommy Robredo at the Swiss Open tennis tournament.

Gil seemed to wear down fifth-seeded Robredo in taking a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 decision. The second set was tied 5-5 when Gil started his string of wins. He held serve to move ahead and then broke Robredo's serve, evening the match at a set apiece.

Gil won the first five games of the third set -- getting two more service breaks -- in grabbing control of the match.

Seventh-seeded Richard Gasquet was the only other seeded player on the schedule and he came away with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Farrukh Dustov. Gasquet dropped only nine points over 10 service games and didn't face a break point.
