Couple fined over fence paint flecks

ALDERSHOT, England, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- British police said they are refunding a criminal damage fine against a couple whose fence paint job left flecks of paint on their neighbor's side of the fence.

Kay Balsdon, 47, and Chris Bates, 29, of Aldershot, England, said police issued them a $127 fine for criminal damage after a neighbor complained that their paint job on a border fence, which belonged to the neighbor, caused flecks of green paint to show up on the neighbor's brown-painted side of the fence, the Daily Mail reported Monday.

The pair said they paid the fine because police told them they would face prosecution if they did not pay.

"I'm amazed that there was such a waste of police time over something so petty," Bates said. "When the police arrived I was speechless for 20 minutes. And when it had finally sunk in I felt angry that I was being punished for something so stupid".

Police said they have conducted a review of the case and have decided to refund the fine. UPI
