Trouble brewing in North Caucasus

NAZRAN, Russia, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Unknown assailants fired on a car in the North Caucasus Republic of Dagestan, killing one following a shootout in nearby Ingushetia, a police official said.

Violence has escalated in the predominately Muslim region of Russia in recent weeks. A driver for a border chief in Dagestan was found dead with his throat cut during the weekend.

Police in Dagestan also announced that they killed insurgent leader Magomedali Vagabov, who was believed to be responsible for a suicide bombing in Moscow that killed 40 people and injured 100 others in March.

The violence follows the death of militant leader Khamzat Shamiley, who reportedly killed himself with a grenade after he was cornered by police. UPI
