NEW YORK, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Kim Clijsters and Caroline Wozniacki, the 2009 U.S. Open women's finalists, were announced Tuesday as the top seeds for this year's final Grand Slam event.
Wozniacki, ranked No. 2 in the world, was installed as the No. 1 seed as top-ranked Serena Williams withdrew from the tournament last week because of a foot injury. Williams won the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year.
Clijsters, the world No. 3 and the second seed at the U.S. Open, defeated Wozniacki 7-5, 6-3 for the 2009 U.S. Open title.
Wozniacki, who won Monday in Montreal, and Clijsters, who took the title in Cincinnati Aug. 15, also claimed the two most recent WTA titles.
Venus Williams was made the No. 3 seed ahead of Jelena Jankovic. French Open finalists Samantha Stosur and Francesca Schiavone are seeded fifth and sixth, respectively. Wimbledon runner-up Vera Zvonareva is seeded seventh and Li Na is eighth. UPI
