118 shops fined for hiking prices in Ramadan

UAE authorities have fined 118 shops for hiking prices of their consumer items during Ramdan in violation of rules issued before the fasting month, the semi official daily Al Ittihad reported on Wednesday.
The fines ranged between Dh1,000 and Dh20,000 and affected shops in 29 markets through the country, it said.
Around 18 per cent of the penalized shops were in Al Ain while Sharjah accounted for 15 per cent, Dubai for 10 per cent and Abu Dhabi for eight per cent, said Hashim Al Nuaimi, Consumer Protection Director at the Ministry of Economy.
He said the fines were a result of an extensive inspection drive launched by the Ministry through Ramdan to ensure dealers abide by price limits.
