China hopes for 'healthy' military ties with U.S. - top official

China is interested in pursuing "healthy" military cooperation with the United States, the vice chairman of the Chinese Central Military Commission said on Wednesday, as Beijing seeks to patch up ties with Washington.
U.S.-China military cooperation is an important part of the two countries' bilateral ties, Xu Caihou was quoted by Xinhua news agency as saying during a meeting with U.S. Deputy National Security Adviser Tom Donilon in Beijing.
China wants to see "healthy and steady development" in U.S.-China military cooperation, he said.
China severed military ties with the United States in January after Washington announced a sale of $6.4 billion worth of arms to Taiwan, an island just off China's west coast, which Beijing considers a rebel region to be reunited with the mainland.
Earlier on Wednesday, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with U.S. National Economic Council Director Larry Summers in a bid to heal the two countries' "sometimes rocky" relations.
