Newborn rescued from Boston alley

BOSTON, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- An infant abandoned by its mother in a Boston alley was rescued by neighbors who heard his cries and investigated, authorities said.

Deysi Vargas said her brother and husband heard the baby's cries Monday night and when they followed the sound they discovered the newborn baby boy in the alley behind their apartment building, the Boston Herald reported.

A 911 call brought firefighters who rescued the apparently unharmed baby from the alley.

"He looked fine," Vargas said. "He was shivering. ... I started crying when I saw him, 'cause he's just a baby".

The Boston Police Department's Child Abuse unit served a search warrant Tuesday on the second floor apartment residents said was the home of the baby's mother, whom they described as a scared teenager.

"Every time she saw someone on the street, she always used to hide her stomach," neighbor Jessica Ventura, 18, said. "She didn't want anyone to know she was pregnant".
