NHL player donates $500,000 to hospital

CHARLOTTETOWN, Prince Edward Island, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Canadian hockey player Brad Richards has announced a $500,000 donation to a hospital in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

Richards, a native of Murray Harbour, P.E.I., announced the donation to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Monday while on the Island for an NHL Dallas Stars training camp, Canadian Broadcasting Corp. News reported.

Richards made the donation in the name of his cousin Jamie Reynolds, who died of brain cancer in Charlottetown in 1989 at age 7 when Richards was just 9 years old.

"To see your best friend pass away with such a tragic thing, he's always remembered that and he's got a big heart," Glen Richards, Brad's father, told CBC News.
