Police: Mom left kids in dark closet

INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- An Indianapolis woman charged with neglect in the death of her two children kept five her children in a closet for 10 hours before the two died, police said.

Police said the children's mother, Ebyan Farah, put two beds against the closet door before leaving the house to go visit a friend, the Indianapolis Star reported.

The closet was 6 feet long and 2 feet wide and had no light, officials said. The woman did not leave food or water for the children -- ranging in ages between 1 and 7 years -- before she left.

Police said Farah didn't return home until 10 hours later. When she opened the closet door, two of the children -- Zakariya Farah, 3, and his sister, Zuhur Farah, 5 -- weren't responsive.

Indianapolis Police Lt. Jeff Duhamell called the matter "(one) of the most inhumane things I've ever seen in 28 years on the job. They were crunched in there on top of each other with no water or food in 80-degree heat".
