MALAKAL, Sudan, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- A grenade explosion that killed at least eight people at a playground in Southern Sudan was an accident, a spokesman for the People's Liberation Army says.
Lt. Gen. Kuol Deim Kuol told the Sudan Tribune one of its soldiers went to a playground in Aweil East County to watch local dancing when his grenade accidentally went off during an altercation with a local youth.
Kuol said the soldier carrying the grenade and another soldier were among the victims of the Sept. 19 incident.
Kuol defended the soldiers' decision to go to the playground.
"Our forces are on maximum alert," he said, adding they are instructed never to part with their arms.
