United Russia to reveal candidates for Moscow mayor next week

The ruling United Russia party will reveal a list of candidates for Moscow mayor next week, senior secretary Vyacheslav Volodin said on Thursday.
United Russia's Moscow secretary Yelena Panina told RIA Novosti earlier on Thursday the list may be presented to President Dmitry Medvedev this weekend, but the party later denied this.
Medvedev fired long-time Moscow mayor Yury Luzhkov on Tuesday, saying he had "lost confidence" in him. Luzhkov's deputy, Vladimir Resin, was appointed acting mayor.
While a dozen senior officials have been tipped to fill the vacant seat, the Kremlin will have a hard time picking up the right one, analysts say.
"The Kremlin has not yet decided what kind of a mayor it wants: a strong and influential or, on the contrary, one weak and incapable of independent political games," analyst Mikhail Vinogradov told the Kommersant newspaper.
