WASHINGTON, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- U.S.-Afghan relations and the Afghan elections were topics of a teleconference between U.S. President Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai, officials said.
The leaders agreed they should work to refine their common vision for Afghanistan and align efforts to support Karzai's goal of transitioning to Afghanistan leading security responsibilities by 2014, the White House press office said Monday when providing a readout of the teleconference.
Obama and Karzai also agreed they would work to finish the U.S.-Afghan Strategic Partnership Declaration by the end of 2010 and support two Afghanistan-related matters during the NATO Summit in Lisbon next month -- the transition to Afghan leadership and a commitment to the Afghan people.
Also participating in the teleconference were Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Defense Secretary Gates, Deputy National Security Adviser Tom Donilon, Chief of Staff Pete Rouse and retired Lt. Gen. Doug Lute from the White House, and Ambassador Karl Eikenberry and Gen. David Petraeus from Kabul.
