Blast in Shiite holy city kills 10

KARBALA, Iraq, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- A car-bombing on a crowded street in the predominantly Shiite city of Karbala, Iraq, killed at least 10 people and injured 38 others Monday, officials said.

An Iraq Interior Ministry official said many of the victims were pilgrims from Iran, CNN reported.

The city, one of the holiest for Shiite Muslims, has had an increase in pilgrims from other countries during the last two years following a drop in violence in the area.

Karbala is about 55 miles southeast of Baghdad, where two other acts of violence were reported Monday.

A roadside bomb detonated outside of a restaurant , injuring four people, two of them police officers, and a mortar round struck the International Zone but didn't cause damage or causalities, officials said.

The International Zone is a fortified central Baghdad district where the U.S. Embassy and Iraqi government offices are located.
