Poll finds distrust between Japan, China

TOKYO, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- A record 87 percent of Japanese respondents believe China is untrustworthy, a poll indicates.

The joint survey by The Yomiuri Shimbun and Oriental Outlook Weekly, a magazine published by China's official Xinhua News Agency, also showed that 79 percent of Chinese respondents found Japan untrustworthy, Xinhua reported.

About 90 percent of Japanese respondents said relations between Japan and China were bad. Among Chinese respondents, 81 percent said bilateral relations with Japan were bad.

A similar poll in Japan in 2009 said 47 percent of respondents believed relations with China were bad.

The new poll indicated 81 percent of Japanese believed North Korea to be their country's most dangerous military threat. China was ranked the second most dangereous threat.

Surveys in both countries were conducted last month by telephone or the Internet. Respondents were 20 or older. Forty-eight percent of the Japanese respondents and 53 percent of Chinese respondents were men.

The poll did not give a margin of error. In Japan 1,040 people were polled; in China 1,045.
