Officials set Indonesia death toll at 488

JAKARTA, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- An erupting volcano, earthquake and tsunami last week in Indonesia killed 488 people and forced the evacuation of more than 85,000, officials said Monday.

Government information indicates that Mount Merapi volcanic eruptions in Yogyakarta province in central Java since Tuesday killed at least 38 people, China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported.

Mount Merapi erupted again Monday, and seismologists said there's no indication that activity is dissipating.

Furgon Hafid, an official at the Disaster Management Agency, said the eruptions injured 42 people and forced 69,412 others to evacuate.

A tsunami triggered by a 7.7-magnitude quake Oct. 25 in the Mentawai Islands of West Sumatra killed 450 people with 96 missing and forced 14,983 others from their homes, officials said. Seven bridges and seven religious facilities collapsed and 719 homes were damaged, Hafid said.

Relief workers confronted poor weather conditions in West Sumatra province while trying to deliver medical and humanitarian aid, Xinhua reported.
