RICHMOND, Va., Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Verizon Communications Inc. has asked the Virginia State Corporation Commission for permission to stop publishing phone books in the state.
In its application, the company, the largest phone company in the state, said customers who ask for them will still get the white pages either online or on paper, The Virginian-Pilot reported. It said business and government directories will still be issued.
But Verizon said the appearance every year of a fat book of residential listings is obsolete because most people rely on online directories. The company cited the acres of dead trees and other resources that go into producing the paper and printing the books.
Virginians appear to have mixed feelings about the phone books. They have until Nov. 19 to send comments to the commission.
