Iran student execution said halted

TEHRAN, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Iran has halted Sunday's execution of a Kurdish-Iranian law student pending further investigation, his lawyer said.

Habibollah Latifi was scheduled to be hanged for security-related offenses; however, Iranian authorities put the execution on hold in order to look into alleged irregularities in the case.

Official Iranian media had word on the reported stay. CNN said the word from Latifi's counsel came via the semi-official Iran Student's News Agency.

Latifi, a law student at Azad University, was arrested in 2007 for his alleged role in an attack on a police station in Kurdistan and attempted assassination of a prosecutor. Prosecutors said he was linked to the anti-government Kurdish Independent Life Party. UPI
