Ivorian sees plot by France and U.S.

PARIS, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Laurent Gbagbo accused France and the United States of plotting against him as his enemies took over the Ivory Coast embassy in Paris Monday.

In interviews published in Le Monde and Le Figaro, the incumbent president said Paris and Washington had prodded the United Nations, the African Union and West African leaders to support Alassane Ouattara, whom they have declared the winner of the disputed recent election.

The incumbent said he would make his case to West African leaders in a meeting Tuesday, the Voice of America reported.

Ouattara spokesman Patrick Achi told France Inter radio fellow African nations are demanding that Gbagbo quit.

On Sunday, France announced it was grounding a plane belonging to Gbagbo at a French airport at Ouattara's demand. The European Union and United States have also imposed sanctions on Gbagbo and his associates.

French Defense Minister Alain Juppe suggested Monday more sanctions could follow if Gbagbo does not give in and the Foreign Ministry said Ouattara would soon be appointing a new ambassador to France.

Ouattara followers peacefully took control of the Paris embassy Monday after Gbagbo's people left. UPI
