South Korea names new military chief

SEOUL, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- South Korea has chosen a new Army chief at a time of high tension with the North, the Defense Ministry in Seoul said Wednesday.

Gen. Kim Sang-ki, commander of the Third Army, has been nominated to succeed Gen. Hwang Eui-don, who quit as chief of staff Tuesday, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported. The Cabinet is to act on the nomination Thursday.

Hwang resigned under accusations of profiting from a property investment made on an inside tip.

Kim served as deputy minister overseeing defense policy before taking command of the Third Army last year.

South Korea's military has remained on high alert since North Korea's shelling of Yeonpyeong Island Nov. 23, which killed four people. The military has been criticized for its perceived weak response. UPI
