Highways reopened in Ontario, Canada

SARNIA, Ontario, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- Canadian authorities Wednesday reopened highways in southwestern Ontario that were closed earlier this week by snow and high winds.

Provincial police are in the process of clearing vehicles off a stretch of westbound Highway 402 where scores of motorists were caught in a massive snow squall Monday, Canada's CTV reported.

It wasn't until late Tuesday that police had checked on each of the 200 trucks and 124 cars scattered across the highway between Sarnia and London, Ont.

Many of drivers and passengers spent a night in the frigid cold waiting for assistance.

A combination of plows, snowmobiles, 4 x 4 vehicles and Canadian forces helicopters were needed to ferry people from the frozen highway to warming centers.

Eastbound 402 reopened Wednesday morning but crews continued to work on the westbound side.

While the weather has improved, police said many of the roads in Lambton County are still too hazardous to drive on. UPI
