23 dead, 1 million displaced in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Flooding in Sri Lanka has killed at least 23 people and displaced more than a million others, officials said.

More than 30,000 Army, Navy, police and air force personnel were providing aid for victims.

The worst-it area was in the island's eastern province, where many residents were cut off from supplies.

Thousands of animals, including elephants, water buffaloes, and livestock died in the floods, including an elephant calf discovered lodged high in a tree near a river that was 18 feet higher than normal, the BBC reported Friday.

Photographer Kanchana Kumara Ariyadasa said a picture he took of the elephant might be a defining image of the flooding in the country. UPI
