Pope John Paul II to be beatified

VATICAN CITY, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Pope Benedict XVI formally credited a miracle to his predecessor, paving the way for Pope John Paul II to be beatified May 1, the Vatican said Friday.

The Vatican said the late John Paul II miraculously cured a nun who reportedly had Parkinson's disease, the BBC reported.

Medical and theological experts credited the late pontiff with healing the nun whose order prayed to him after he died in 2005, CNN said.

The process of beatification, or declaring the late pope to be "blessed," is a critical step toward making him a saint. Being elevated from beatification to sainthood requires a second miracle.

John Paul II died in 2005 after serving nearly 27 years as pope. UPI
