Floods, landslides kill 10 in Philippines

MANILA, Philippines, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- Philippine President Benigno Simeon Aquino III ordered the evacuation of residents affected by flooding and landslides that killed at least 10 people.

Aquino said he instructed Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin to look into conditions in different parts of the country and "make sure that those affected are transferred to a safer place," the Philippine News Agency reported.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said one person was reported missing, the Sun Star reported.

The council said floods and landslides have affected at least 37,718 families in four cities and 12 provinces.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration warned local government officials to prepare for more landslides and flooding from rain expected to fall until Thursday. UPI
