JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Doctors for former South African President Nelson Mandela say the 92-year-old had a restful night at home where he is recovering from a respiratory infection.
Mandela was admitted to Johannesburg's Milpark Hospital Wednesday for treatment and then was discharged Friday to recuperate in his home in Houghton, the South African government news service BuaNews reported Monday.
Mandela is responding to treatment, acting President Kgalema Motlanthe said, although doctors have expressed concern about the large number of visitors he is receiving.
"Once again we want to appeal to all that we accord the former president and his family the space to support him in privacy and dignity which he deserves," Motlanthe said. "Doctors must also be allowed to do their work without any undue pressure and in an atmosphere that allows them to carry on with their duties without any disturbance".
The country, its people and friends around the world would be kept informed of any developments in Mandela's health, Motlanthe said.
"We wish to take this opportunity to thank all our people and friends around the world for their continued support to Mr. Mandela and his family, and want to assure them that we are doing all we can to ensure that he recovers fully," he said. UPI
