U.S. recluse leaves millions to Scotland

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- An elderly millionaire recluse who killed himself in November in Las Vegas has left his entire estate to the National Trust for Scotland, officials there said.

William R. Lindsay, 79, had already given the trust a lot of money, The Scotsman reported. Johanna Gurland, the trust's U.S. fundraiser, said his estate could come to about $4 million.

Lindsay, who was unmarried, lived alone in Las Vegas, Gurland said. She was unsure where his money came from.

"If you saw him, you wouldn't think he had a dime," she said.

While his ancestors were from Scotland, she was unsure what attracted him to the trust except a fascination with the age of many of the buildings it preserves.

"Like many Americans he had a fantasy of Scotland based on the movie "Brigadoon" and not too much else," she said.

She said when he first called her in 2004 she suspected he was lonely and had concocted his story of having a lot of money. She said although they only met face to face once, they bonded over their love of dogs and talked frequently on the telephone.

"I think he was lonely but he wasn't needy," she said. UPI
