ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- U.S. military aircraft have ferried 1.16 million pounds of relief supplies into flood-ravaged Pakistan in the past two weeks, officials said Friday.
The aerial relief efforts, which started Aug. 5, are being accomplished with military helicopters and C-130 cargo planes in conjunction with the Pakistani military, the U.S. Defense Department said in a release.
"We're honored to partner together, side by side with the Pakistan military and government, helping Pakistanis in their time of need," Navy Vice Adm. Michael A. LeFever, the U.S. defense representative to Pakistan, said. "The courage and discipline displayed by the Pakistani military during this crisis has been truly impressive".
Included in the relief aid are nearly 437,000 packaged meals that conform with Islamic law that were transported from U.S. stocks in Afghanistan and elsewhere in the region, the Defense Department said. UPI
