At least 90 dead in India floods

NEW DELHI, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Heavy rains, flooding and landslides have claimed the lives of at least 90 people in northern India, local government officials say.

The states of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh are the hardest hit but New Delhi faces the threat of severe flooding that could disrupt the Commonwealth Games set to begin early next month, OneIndia News reported.

Hundreds of villages are reported to be submerged in the two states.

Uttarakhand is seeking financial help from the government to rehabilitate nearly 200 villages and repair damaged roads and canals, a spokesman for the chief minister told Press Trust of India.

An aerial tour indicated Bijore, Rampur and Moradbad were the hardest hit.
