Typhoon-triggered floods, slides kill 18

BEIJING, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Typhoon Fanapi-triggered rain, floods and mudslides killed at least 18 people Wednesday in southern China, local officials said.

Forty-eight others were reported missing in Guangdong province where some areas reported receiving 25 inches of rain during a 24-hour period, China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported.

The heavy downpours destroyed more than 1,200 homes and forced 78,300 people throughout the province to flee, provincial flood control officials said.

Typhoon Fanapi, the 11th and strongest typhoon to strike China so far this year, made landfall in Fujian province Monday, but did most of its damage in neighboring Guangdong, Xinhua said.

As of Wednesday, no deaths were reported in Fujian, officials said.
