DETROIT, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Downed electrical wires were responsible for most of the 85 fires that broke out during a four-hour period in Detroit Tuesday, officials said.
No fatalities or serious injuries were reported in the more than seven dozen fires, the Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday.
Dozens of buildings were destroyed and Red Cross volunteers were helping people burned out of their homes, police said.
Fire officials blamed most of the fires on downed electrical wires, although the cause of some blazes remained under investigation. DTE Energy, which said up to 50,000 people without pow because of high winds, said it began its own investigation.
Because gusty winds were expected to be an issue into Wednesday, DTE spokesman Scott Simons said, it wasn't clear when power would be restored to all customers, The Detroit News reported.
