MIAMI, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Tomas, a Category 2 hurricane Sunday morning, by late night had weakened to tropical storm status as it roamed the eastern Caribbean Sea, meteorologists said.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami said in its 11 p.m. EDT advisory winds being generated by Tomas were only hitting 65 mph, down from 100 mph earlier in the day. Those winds were reaching out up to 175 miles from the storm's eye.
The center said Tomas was about 215 miles northeast of Curacao and 265 miles south of Ponce, Puerto Rico, as it headed west at 15 mph.
Because it was safely out at sea, the center said there was no need for any coastal watches or warnings.
Center forecasters said Tomas would continue its westward track but slow down and weaken further during the next 48 hours.
